Production Notes
You Might Find It Interesting That...
- The set is an old retail space that is now home to CNY Book Auctions, and the layout of the "café" is just the opposite of the actual space - with the real front door located just on the other side of the wall where Gus & Alphie sit all night.
- The movie was always set in Buffalo, NY. Ironically, though it was shot entirely in Ithaca, NY, all three principal actors are from Buffalo.
- The original location for the shoot was going to be the then-vacant Joe's Restaurant in downtown Ithaca.
- The "cops" in the movie are actual Auburn, NY police officers and wear Auburn uniforms. In real life, Auburn is two hours east of Buffalo.
- Despite it's brief, 75-minute running time, Waiting On Alphie actually has deleted scenes.
- The soundtrack features over 20 songs from artists all over the world, and every single song is played somewhere in the movie or credits.
- The title song "Remember" by Anevis was something director Kevin Hicks was interested in prior to shooting the movie. Hicks contacted Anevis with his interest in using the track, but never heard back. The song kept playing in his head during the shoot, and he contacted the band a second time after shooting had finished. They had never received the first contact and were delighted to be on board with the project. The rest is opening credit history...
Technical Factoids:
- 6-day shoot (April 1-3, 8-10 2005)
- Entire production was storyboarded in FrameForge 3D Studio.
- Entire shoot was captured directly to computer using Serious Magic's DV Rack software.
- Entire movie was edited, scored and post produced in Sony Media Software.
- Waiting On Alphie is the first all-digital feature to be completed in Ithaca, NY.
- The entire movie being set in one location allowed for an ambitious 15-page/day schedule. After a very successful Day 1 of shooting, technical difficulties and other obstacles caused the production to fall far behind schedule on Day 2. Cast & crew then pulled together and shot 30 pages of script (one-third of the movie) on Day 3 while only going one hour over the scheduled time.
- The smoke you see coming from Gus' gun is real (actually cigarette smoke); the smoke you see coming from the Robber's gun was done in post (thank you, John Rofrano).
- The VASST shirt the Waiter wears features the official VASST logo, but was created by us especially for the movie. A green version was created as well, but we went with the orange. (The green version appears during the end credits).
- Nine rolls of pink insulation were used to drape overhead and cut down the terrible echo of the set.
